SATB - Level 3

From the pen of acclaimed arranger Rosana Eckert comes this uplifting song that can be performed with choir and rhythm section, or with choir and a full big band! Somewhat loosely in the style of “Sing, Sing, Sing”, the chart is arranged for SATB voices with a number of small solos, perfect for letting lots of your singers have shorter solo moments.

The Jay Bird

SSATB - Level 3

Composer Drew Zaremba penned “Pistachio” – a catchy boogaloo originally recorded by the One O’ Clock Lab Band at University of North Texas. Lots of room for improvisation, and a fun shout chorus which brings smiles to the audience and the ensemble! (Note: the big band version is available from the composer’s website. Arranger Rosana Eckert set it for SSATB voices and rhythm section and you’ll want to dig into this with your choir and rhythm section.

Hearts Take Time

SSATB/SSAB - Level 3

Originally performed by Diane Schuur on the album “Talkin’ Bout You”, acclaimed arranger Rosana Eckert has set this tune in a buoyant Afro-Cuban feel, moving into swing and providing ample opportunity for both lyric solos and improvised solos, as well as an optional choir soli for an extra challenge. The lyric speaks to the time it takes to move on from a relationship or a bad experience.

The Bungalow

SATB - Level 2+

Medium swingin’ blues. In the style of Rosana’s popular chart on Clifford Brown’s “Sandu” (but with lyrics), this is a cool bluesy bebop hybrid that teaches vocabulary, style, and is a great vehicle for practicing improvisation. Written by Rosana and Gary Eckert, it features an accessible group soli that still has some meat to chew on (or you can just leave that part out!). Published by Rosana Eckert Music.

The Awakening

SSATB - Level 4

Mambo. Original by Rosana with inspirational lyrics, written for the University of North Texas Jazz Singers.  Includes solo sections, and an extended “dreamy to energetic” transitioning soli section.  (Musically, this tune was inspired by the songs “Recordame” and “Spain.”)  It’s a journey – great for the “meaty” tune in the center of your program or an exciting closer. Flamenco-inspired Waltz, an exciting and rhythmic original song by Norwegian jazz/pop artist Hildegunn Gjedrem. A story of personal conflict told through a wide range of dynamics, it features an alto lyric solo, building from gentle verses to a dramatic and high-energy ending. Mad Heaven

SSATB - Level 3+

Samba by Peter Eldridge (New York Voices), the beautiful title track from his album Mad Heaven.  It has a colorful and interesting lyric about the push and pull we feel as we try to find out way in the world.  Features the ten/bass sections quite a bit with nice unison melody lines, or you could feature a male soloist.  Published by Rosana Eckert Music.

Into The Fire

SATB, SSAA- Level 3

Groovy Samba. A catchy Rosana Eckert original with an uplifting lyric about taking the high road and going “into the fire” to face life’s challenges… for what we put into this world is what we will get back!  The groove alternates between a gentle Caribbean soca and a medium Samba (the rhythm parts are detailed). This was a commissioned piece by Slovenian vocal jazz quartet Vox Arsana for their debut CD Turn it Up which they recorded with the RTV Slovenija Big Band.  Their version is a shortened “radio edit” of the original. Forever Blue

Samba-style pop tune written by singer/songwriter/pianist Peter Eldridge of the New York Voices. Harmonically rich and rhythmically interesting, it includes a lyric solo feature for any voice type, section unison features, lush chorus harmonies, and a catchy “jam” section at the end. SSATB - Level 4

Brazilian Baiao/Samba.  Exciting original piece commissioned by Christine Guter for the Cal State Long Beach vocal jazz group Pacific Standard Time.  Both rhythmically intricate and beautifully flowing, this uplifting song is set to the Brazilian grooves Baiao and Samba.  With its dramatic ending, this piece could open or close a program. Straight 8/Samba. A contemporary reinvention of this friendly and classic jazz standard by Loesser and Lane! It is a journey with plenty of time and tonal shifts to keep you on your toes, but honoring the lyric and flow of the melody to ultimately express the joy of music.

Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic

SAB - Level 2+

Samba and Swing version of this popular song by Sting, features guys and gals trading solos as well as rhythmic switching back and forth from samba to swing. It finishes with a fun vamp swing section with an adlib vocal solo. Great lyrics, and lots of space for soloing. Piano, bass and drum parts are included.

Medium-Up Swing. A great opener for your choir! This straight-ahead swing chart features a vocal solo, an exciting shout chorus, an open scat/solo section, and a group drum-break/trading section. Nice lyrics, careful thought to the voice leading, some group bebop lines, and fun chords to sing – fun! Written-out rhythm section parts (including a piano part with bass-lines for rehearsal or performance with only a pianist) as well as a composite rhythm chart available.

This breezy, fresh samba is a delightful original song by Canadian jazz singer Carol Welsman. Piano, bass, drums, and guitar parts included – both written-out and composite rhythm parts available.  This tune is catchy, beautiful and fun to sing – quick to put together, lots of repetition.  It’s a crowd-pleasing advanced-sounding chart that sounds harder than it actually is – our favorite thing!

Medium Swing. Originally an easy-listening pop hit for Petula Clark, this song lends itself well to a vocal jazz setting for mixed and women’s groups, offering opportunities to develop intonation, blend, rhythm and solo techniques.

Moonray

Medium Swing. inspired by the amazing version by Nancy King with the Metropole Orchestra.  (She is so swingin!!!)  This chart has a lyric solo, great 4-part sections that trade with scat singers (with written-out solo lines for young improvisers), a group soli section, and a closing contrapuntal section that could be an open vamp to feature more soloists.  It’s chock full, but doable! A Woman's Voice

Ballad. Composed by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman.  This song is a tribute to women (oh yeah!) in power ballad form, featuring a female soloist with choir back-up.  This leans a bit more traditional choral than jazz choir, so it can serve as a great cross-over piece in your program.

Where Is Love?

Ballad. A unique arrangement that retains the integrity of the original song (from the show Oliver) and tells the story through refreshing harmonies and gentle rhythms. The ballad opens with a traditional rubato a cappella, goes into tempo and has two lyric solo features in the middle.  Very approachable, mostly SAT with just a few splits in the men’s parts.  Rhythm parts available.

This arrangement was commissioned and composed for the annual Generations in Jazz Festival in South Australia. The lyric has a theme of unity and togetherness, set to a relaxed swing feel. This charge will provide a little challenge to your SSAA choir, but the thoughtful voice leading helps get the job done. Sopranos have some 3-part splits. RANGE: Soprano up to F5, down to Bb3. Alto up to C5, down to F3. Includes a cappella vocal score, plus a copy of the demo.

This is an original composition by Rosana, dedicated to a close family member whose life has been filled with crazy adventure, tremendous success, and deep heartache.  Through it all, joy, family, and love prevail. Verses are in a ballad style, the chorus is more of a groove, building toward the end.  This arrangement was commissioned and sung by “Shades of Blue” from Flower Mound High School, directed by Mark Rohwer.

For a little comic relief… this is an a cappella original swing tune about… yep… corn… as in, on the cob. This piece was written by Rosana and Gary Eckert and arranged by Rosana for a food-themed concert by the Texas Voices Chamber Choir.  Whether your choir leans jazz or classical, this comical swing tune can be a fun novelty piece.
